American Lit First Semester Exam Overview 2013-14
  1. You will be given excerpts of reading passages with questions related to understanding and evaluating the literary passages. Some questions will relate to when and why pieces written, i.e. importance of a political speech given to spur on the Revolutionary War
  2. You will be given sample writing passages (such as a student's rough draft of an essay introduction) along with questions over writing skills, such as style, improvement, sentence correction, editing and revising, identifying errors in usage and mechanics)
  3. You will also have multiple choice questions over literary terms. Some will be definitions only, but most will be how the literary elements work and contribute to meaning of works.
  4. You will have multiple choice questions over the aspects and importance of
    • Colonial Period - Age of Faith, including The Crucible by Arthur Miller
    • Revolutionary Period - Age of Reason
    • Native American Culture and Literature (not a huge section of exam)
    • You do not have to the entire works memorized. You should focus on knowing key elements -- why written, type of writing,
  5. You will not have to write any essays on this exam.

2. Find the page title Exploring American Renaissance and Transcendentalism. Fill it in as you go through the webquest. This will prepare you on the topic, and will prepare you to write an essay on the subject. Each question of the quiz is on the Task Page and contains a corresponding link on the Resources Page where the answer to the question may be found on various websites. After you fill in the work page, get it initialed by Ms. Lee (or substitute teacher). Do this before you move on.


3. After you’ve had your work page initialed, use the information obtained, from visiting the websites associated with the questions, and your textbook to create an outline for your Transcendentalism Definition Paper


4. After you have created your outline as pre-writing, continue to gather information from your textbook as related to Transcendentalism.


5. Draft Transcendentalism Definition Paper.


6. Edit, revise, and proofread paper.
